Twilight on the Tamsui River

淡水暮色傳福音

2021
油彩/畫布
600 x 400 cm

Tamsui River, known as the most popular scenery landscape for sunset in northern Taiwan, meant “fresh water”. Close by stands the Tamsui Chapel, built in the honor of the Presbyterian missionary Dr. GL Mackay in the 19th century, is the historical landmark of the Tamsui district. With the vibrant mornings and serene nights, Tamsui river is not only the main water source of the northern Taiwan that fed generations of people, but also a symbol of peaceful living.

Nevertheless, the Tamsui River was once heavily polluted by both raw sewage and industrial pollution in the 20th century. Attributing to years of active cleaning and and natural river restoration by the government and civil organizations, Tamsui River was back to its beautiful name.

In my painting, I used the traditional ink painting strokes as well as water colors, symbolizing the integration of eastern and western culture represented by Tamsui, whilst blue and yellow representing the shimmery twilight over the river that the Taiwan folks enjoyed gathering at the riverbank and worshipped the magnificent sight while the Gospel Bell rings across the river.

I hope my painting would raise the awareness of cultural as well as environmental preservation.
